I spent surprisingly little time thinking about Carter and Yvette.

Instead, I considered the years ahead.

For perhaps the first time in decades, I was asking myself what I wanted rather than automatically accepting whatever arrangements others made for me.

In January, Carter and Yvette came for dinner as promised.

The four of them arrived on a Saturday evening.

Maisie carried a crayon drawing she’d made especially for me.

It depicted the chalet, with a stick-figure version of me standing on its roof.

When I asked why she’d drawn me there, she couldn’t explain beyond “that’s where you’d want to be, Grandma, so you could see everything.”

Yvette was quieter than I’d ever known her.

Without being prompted, she joined me in the kitchen and began chopping vegetables for the salad.

Meanwhile, Carter and the children prepared the table.

Partway through our work, she spoke unexpectedly.

“I’ve been thinking about why I used your first name in that text.”

I continued chopping.

“Oh?”

“I think I did it because it felt safer than calling you Mom and then having to actually explain myself to someone who deserved an explanation. It’s easier to disappoint a name than a person, if that makes sense.”

I stopped cutting and looked directly at her.

It was probably the most sincere thing she’d said to me in four years.

“It does make sense,” I said. “Thank you for telling me that.”

“I’m not asking you to put the phone lines back,” she added quickly. “Or the chalet thing. I understand why you did what you did. I just wanted you to know I’ve thought about it. A lot.”

“I appreciate that, Yvette.”

Later, during dessert, she called me Mom for the first time in four years.

It wasn’t a grand declaration.

The word appeared naturally while she asked whether Mom’s apple crisp recipe was the same one Carter’s grandmother had once used.

I noticed immediately.

But I didn’t draw attention to it.

Our conversation continued for three hours, long after the children moved into another room to watch a movie.

We discussed things that should have been addressed years earlier.

I didn’t pretend the past had never happened.

Nor did I use those memories to attack her.

Without formally announcing an agreement, we established that our relationships needed to change.

When we visited, Yvette would refer to Maisie’s bedroom as “Grandma’s room” rather than “the guest room.”

My birthday would receive the same consideration as everyone else’s.

And financial hardship would never again be used to dismiss me while extravagant generosity was extended elsewhere.

I don’t know whether those improvements will last.

Their future behavior isn’t something I can control.

What I can control is my willingness to accept less respect than I deserve.

I no longer wait anxiously for people I’ve always chosen to finally choose me.

These days, my Sundays often involve talking with Cordelia, looking at Maisie’s drawing taped to my refrigerator, and enjoying the simple comfort of knowing something important.

Love that survives a difficult Christmas and becomes more honest afterward was never something I needed to purchase.

I only needed to stop apologizing for expecting it.
