Right in the middle of the rug.

Theo sat on his chest.

June and Ivy lay on either side, resting their heads against his arms as though they were pillows.

Mabel sat cross-legged near his head, attempting to braid his hair.

She wasn’t particularly good at it.

When Brandon noticed me, he looked up.

He hadn’t shaved for two days.

There was a stain from Theo getting sick on his shirt, and his eyes looked tired and red.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” I answered.

“I didn’t clean,” he admitted. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t. I tried. Every time I started, somebody needed something.”

I looked down at him.

Lying on the rug.

Surrounded by our children.

“I know,” I said.

Mabel lifted her head.

She looked toward me, then at Brandon, and back at me again.

Concern appeared on her little face.

“Mommy,” she asked. “Are you mad at Daddy?”

I knelt beside her on the rug.

Then I looked into my daughter’s eyes.

“No, baby,” I reassured her. “I’m not mad at Daddy.”

She glanced toward Brandon.

“Is Daddy mad at you?”

Brandon carefully pushed himself upright.

Theo slid gently from his chest into his lap.

He turned toward Mabel.

“No, Mabes,” he said. “Daddy’s not mad at Mommy.”

Mabel studied him for a long moment.

Her head tilted slightly.

Like a little bird.

“You were,” she reminded him. “Before. When she got clean.”

Brandon’s expression softened, and tears filled his eyes.

“I know,” he said. “I was. And I was wrong.”

Mabel remained quiet.

“Mabel,” Brandon said. “Can I tell you something?”

She nodded.

“On Tuesday,” he began. “When Mommy was in the shower. You took care of everybody. Theo and June and Ivy. You did the peas. You got the diaper. You sang the song.”

Mabel slowly nodded again.

“That was Daddy’s job,” Brandon explained. “Not yours. You’re four. You’re not supposed to take care of everybody. Daddy was supposed to do that.”

“But you were busy,” Mabel replied.

“I wasn’t busy,” Brandon admitted. “I was playing a game on my phone.”

Mabel stared at him.

“And when Mommy came back,” he continued, “I told her you were all being bad. I told her you were screaming and fighting. That wasn’t true. You were all being really, really good.”

His voice began breaking.

“I’m sorry I said that,” he told her. “I’m sorry I made Mommy feel bad. And I’m sorry I made you feel like you had to be extra good so I wouldn’t get mad.”

He looked directly at her.

“You don’t have to be extra good,” he said. “You never have to be extra good. You just get to be four.”

Mabel gazed at her father for a long time.

Then she crawled into his lap beside Theo.

She wrapped her little arms around Brandon’s neck.

“Okay, Daddy,” she whispered.

That happened a year ago.

Brandon attends therapy now.

Every Thursday at six o’clock.

His therapist is Dr. Feld, a specialist in Worthington who works with fathers, particularly men who grew up with emotionally unavailable father figures.

Brandon doesn’t share every detail of their sessions.

And I don’t insist that he does.

But one evening in March, he came home after an appointment and sat on the edge of our bed.

“Dr. Feld asked me what I was afraid of. If I actually did it. If I actually showed up.”

I turned toward him.

“What did you say?”

Brandon remained silent for a long moment.

“That it would be hard,” he finally admitted. “And I wouldn’t be good at it. And everybody would see.”

He looked at me.

“Dr. Feld said, Your wife has been hard and not good at it in front of everybody for four years. And she does it anyway.”

We also attend couples counseling every other Tuesday.

It hasn’t been easy.

Some weeks, we barely speak during the drive to our appointment. Other weeks, the journey home passes in complete silence.

I still feel angry sometimes.

More often than I’d like to admit.

Our therapist says those feelings are understandable. For four years, I pushed aside my frustration, and processing everything I’d kept inside would take time.

But our lives have changed.

Every Saturday morning, Brandon takes responsibility for the children from seven until noon.

All four of them.

By himself.

Sometimes I go to the gym. Sometimes I visit a coffee shop.

Other mornings, I simply sit in my car in the Kroger parking lot, listening to a podcast without worrying about what needs to happen next.

Every single Saturday.

And Brandon has never called to ask me to return early.

He also handles bedtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Baths, pajamas, brushing teeth, and bedtime stories.

He’s learned the lullaby too.

He doesn’t sing particularly well. His voice wanders off-key, and he occasionally forgets the second verse.

But the twins couldn’t care less.

In April, Brandon removed the living room security camera.

I asked him why.

He stood there holding the little white dome in his hand.

“I don’t want to need it,” he said. “I want to be the camera. I want to be the one who sees.”

In September, I returned to work.

Only part-time, two days each week, but it meant more to me than I could explain.

I went back to the children’s hospital in Columbus, working in occupational therapy.

The same department I’d left five years earlier.

On my first day, my former supervisor spotted me in the hallway and immediately hugged me.

“We’ve missed you,” she said.

After my shift, I sat alone in my car inside the parking garage and cried for twenty minutes.

But they weren’t tears of sadness.

They were the other kind.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, while I’m at the hospital, Brandon works from home.

His company approved the arrangement after he requested it.

For years, he’d never thought to ask his employer for that kind of flexibility.

Now he handles preschool pickup, prepares lunch, and manages the children’s naps.

He’s still not very good at guiding June through her speech exercises.

June frequently corrects him.

And then there’s Mabel.

She’s five now.

She attends kindergarten at Darby Creek Elementary.

She can read, and she’s learning to ride a bicycle without training wheels.

Brandon teaches her in our cul-de-sac every Sunday afternoon.

She’s still a thoughtful, serious little girl.

She still tilts her head when she’s concentrating, like a curious bird.

But something about her has changed.

In October, her kindergarten teacher called.

When the school’s phone number appeared on my screen, my stomach immediately tightened.

“Mrs. Callahan,” the teacher began. “I just wanted to tell you something. About Mabel.”

“Is she okay?” I asked.

“She’s wonderful,” the teacher reassured me. “We were doing a drawing exercise today. Draw your family doing something together. And I wanted to tell you what she drew.”

Then she sent me a photograph.

It showed a crayon drawing on plain white paper.

A living room.

A sofa.

A television.

On the couch sat a dark-haired woman.

Her feet were raised, and she held a cup with little lines rising above it to represent steam.

On the rug were four children.

Three girls and a little boy with bright red hair.

And lying on his back among them was a man, surrounded by children.

Across the top of the page, written in Mabel’s careful kindergarten handwriting, were the words:

MY FAMLY. MOMMY IS RESTING. DADDY IS WATCHING US.

I attached the drawing to our refrigerator.

When Brandon arrived home, he noticed it immediately.

He stood in front of it for a long time.

He didn’t speak.

He simply reached out and rested his hand against the paper.

Last Tuesday evening, something familiar happened at seven o’clock.

All four children had finished their baths, changed into pajamas, and settled comfortably in the living room.

These peaceful moments happen more frequently now.

Theo was inside his playpen.

He’s two now, and he doesn’t really need it anymore.

But he still enjoys sitting there.

He calls it his house.

The twins were on the rug, resting on their bibbas and holding hands while watching Bluey.

Mabel sat on the couch with Clover beside her.

She was reading a book aloud, entirely by herself, without anyone asking her to.

And Brandon was on the floor.

Not relaxing in his recliner.

Sitting on the rug with Theo’s stacking cups.

He was building a tower that Theo delighted in knocking over again and again.

I paused in the doorway.

I looked at all of them.

“I’m going to take a shower,” I announced.

Brandon glanced up.

“Take your time,” he replied.

“I’ll be quick.”

“Erin,” he said. “Take your time.”

So I did.

I spent forty minutes in the shower.

I stood beneath the warm water with my eyes closed, allowing it to flow gently over my face.

I washed my hair twice.

I applied conditioner and actually left it in long enough to work.

I shaved both legs.

And I breathed.

For once, I wasn’t constantly listening for someone crying.

When I finally returned to the living room, everyone was almost exactly where I’d left them.

Theo was asleep inside his playpen.

His green pacifier rested in his mouth.

The twins had fallen asleep on the rug, their little hands still intertwined.

Mabel was sleeping on the sofa.

Clover rested against her chest, and her open book lay across her lap.

And Brandon was there.

Sitting on the floor beside the couch.

Watching our children.

He raised his eyes when I entered.

He didn’t say anything.

And he didn’t need to.

His expression hadn’t changed since I’d left.

There was no performance.

No sudden frustration.

No tightly clenched jaw.

Just a tired father sitting on his living room floor after a long day.

Watching his children sleep.

“How were they?” I asked.

He glanced toward Mabel on the couch.

“June bumped her head on the coffee table,” he said. “I got the peas.”

I nearly laughed.

“Theo lost his binky,” he continued. “It was under the couch. Left side. By the leg.”

“Of course it was.”

“Mabel tried to get it for him,” Brandon said. “I said, I’ve got it, Mabes. You don’t have to.”

He looked toward our sleeping daughter.

“She looked at me,” he said quietly. “For a long time. Like she was checking. Like she wanted to make sure.”

“And then?” I asked.

Brandon swallowed.

“And then she went back to her book,” he answered. “And she let me.”

I lowered myself onto the floor beside him.

Neither of us spoke.

We simply sat together in the quiet living room, watching our four children sleep.

Sometimes people ask me what finally changed.

Friends from the mothers’ group at church.

My sister.

My mother.

Even women I barely know who have heard parts of our story.

They want to know what I said to Brandon.

What I did differently.

How I finally made him understand.

And I always tell them the truth.

I wasn’t the one who made him see.

My four-year-old daughter did.

She sang my bedtime song to comfort her little brother.

She stood on her tiptoes to retrieve frozen peas from the freezer door.

She carefully placed a diaper on the edge of the playpen so I wouldn’t have to search for one.

And when her father put away his phone and changed his expression, she sat quietly on the rug with her hands folded in her lap.

Trying to be extra good.

So he wouldn’t become angry with me.

I didn’t need to explain everything to Brandon.

I only needed him to witness what our daughter had experienced.

Twenty minutes.

Recorded by a small camera near the ceiling.

That was enough to begin changing everything.

Twenty minutes of footage.

A four-year-old wearing pink unicorn pajamas.

A bag of frozen peas.

And a father who finally recognized that the most difficult part of his evening hadn’t been caring for his children.

It had been maintaining the appearance that caring for them was impossible.

We still have that recording.

I’ve never deleted it.

Brandon once asked whether I would consider removing it.

I told him no.

“Why?” he asked.

I thought carefully before answering.

“Because someday,” I said, “Mabel’s going to grow up. And get married. And have kids. And someday she might be standing in a doorway with wet hair, apologizing to somebody for needing twenty minutes.”

Brandon remained quiet.

“And I want to be able to show her,” I continued, “what she did when she was four. When nobody else would.”

I paused.

“And I want to show her,” I said, “what her father did after.”

Brandon looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“Okay,” he said. “Keep it.”

I made it last Tuesday.

I filmed it on my phone from the living room doorway after finishing my shower.

It’s forty-one seconds long.

It shows a man sitting on the floor of a living room.

Beside a couch where his five-year-old daughter is sleeping.

Near a rug where two little girls are asleep, still holding hands.

And close to a playpen where a two-year-old boy sleeps peacefully.

The man is simply watching them.

He’s not looking at his phone.

He’s not sitting in his recliner.

He’s just there.

Present.

Watching his children.

Nothing especially dramatic happens.

Nobody bumps their head.

Nobody loses a pacifier.

Nobody needs to sing a lullaby.

It’s simply a father spending a quiet evening with his children while their mother takes a shower.

And of all the videos I’ve ever recorded, it’s my favorite.
