“Mark.”

He held up both hands, but his face was dark. “I’m not going there. But you need to call a lawyer tonight.”

“I need to make sure Sophie’s okay.”

“You need both.”

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

Dr. Patel returned forty minutes later.

“No fractures,” she said.

I exhaled for what felt like the first time in hours.
