Never.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him, desperate to believe him and terrified to be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel swallowed hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept asking why you stopped taking my calls,\u201d he said. \u201cMarta told me you were sleeping. Studying. Visiting friends.\u201d His voice lowered. \u201cWhen I asked why you looked sad on the cameras, she said you missed your mother and wanted to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lena gave the tiniest shake of her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence shattered him more than any accusation could have.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, Marta tried one last time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, she misunderstands\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said, standing again. \u201cI misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pressed a button on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Within seconds, two security men appeared at the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Marta\u2019s face changed instantly from defensive to frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Laurent, please\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not look at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEscort her out,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d Marta gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Now he did look at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree months of camera footage,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThreats. Neglect. Physical abuse of a child in my home.\u201d His expression did not move. \u201cPray the footage is kinder than my memory is going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guards took Marta by the arms as she began protesting, pleading, crying, trying to turn back toward Lena as if the child might somehow save her.<\/p>\n<p>Lena stepped closer to Gabriel instead.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt him too.<\/p>\n<p>The instinctive move of a child finally picking the safer adult.<\/p>\n<p>The doors closed behind Marta.<\/p>\n<p>The foyer became quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time it wasn\u2019t the cold quiet from before.<\/p>\n<p>It was the kind that comes after something poisonous has finally been dragged out into the light.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned fully to his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>She looked very small in his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Very tired.<\/p>\n<p>He knelt once more and opened his arms cautiously, as if he knew trust had to be offered before it could be taken.<\/p>\n<p>Lena stared at him for one long second.<\/p>\n<p>Then she ran into him.<\/p>\n<p>Not gracefully.<\/p>\n<p>Not delicately.<\/p>\n<p>Like a child who had been holding herself together too long and had finally been given permission to fall apart.<\/p>\n<p>He held her so tightly his shoulders shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he whispered into her hair. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry I left you alone with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She buried her face against him and cried harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you stopped loving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel broke completely then.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled back just enough to look at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLena,\u201d he said, tears on his face now too, \u201cI should have come home sooner. I should have listened better. But I never stopped loving you. Not for one second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied him with the serious, wounded eyes children get when life has forced them to grow too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked the question she had been carrying the longest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you stay now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Whole and immediate.<\/p>\n<p>He stood up with her in his arms and carried her away from the marble floor she had been forced to scrub, past the bright yellow mop, past the spilled chips, past the room that had watched her be small.<\/p>\n<p>And as the red light on the camera continued to glow overhead, the Laurent mansion finally recorded something it should have seen much sooner\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a father coming home in time to keep his daughter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The foyer went dead silent.
