Trevor returned home the following afternoon.<\/p>\n

The second was because he could not remember when he was meant to remove one of his bandages.<\/p>\n

I told him to check the paperwork sitting on his kitchen counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m off duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe salary thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trevor glanced at me, then back toward them.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut every time you talk about being proud of me, you somehow make Elise\u2019s job sound smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s face shifted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have never said her job was small.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elise could have done better.<\/p>\n

Such difficult work for what they pay.<\/p>\n

A waste of your brain.<\/p>\n

I could have repeated every word.<\/p>\n

I did not have to.<\/p>\n

Trevor did.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, you literally called nursing a waste.\u201d<\/p>\n

She appeared uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI meant she had so much potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Trevor nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You just rank us every dinner by what we make.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad appeared offended.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan quietly took another sip of water.<\/p>\n

She was wise enough to stay out of it.<\/p>\n

Trevor continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was in the hospital, I watched those nurses do everything from noticing when I was getting nauseated to getting me out of bed when I absolutely did not want to move.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cAnd Elise knew I needed to go in before any of us did.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cI didn\u2019t know what was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

That distinction was important to me.<\/p>\n

Trevor turned back toward Dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe knew not to ignore it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad lowered his eyes to his plate.<\/p>\n

Trevor did not deliver some dramatic speech.<\/p>\n

He did not claim that I had saved his life.<\/p>\n

I had not.<\/p>\n

He simply said, \u201cStop using my paycheck to decide whose career matters more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom remained silent for a moment.<\/p>\n

Then she turned toward me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t realize it felt like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stopped.<\/p>\n

That appeared to be the sentence he had never fully accepted.<\/p>\n

Not fallen into.<\/p>\n

Not settled for.<\/p>\n

I explained something I had given up trying to explain years before.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I loved emergency nursing because no two shifts ever looked the same.<\/p>\n

I enjoyed teaching newer nurses.<\/p>\n

I liked being skilled at something difficult.<\/p>\n

I liked that my work was practical.<\/p>\n

I did not enjoy night shifts.<\/p>\n

I did not enjoy staffing shortages.<\/p>\n
