interpretation.

No debate over tone.

No adult history a child could be blamed for misunderstanding.

Lorraine had written the word herself.

Travis straightened.

Yesterday, he had told me he had not planned this.

He had prepared for it.

Now I understood the difference.

Planning would have meant waiting for Lorraine to fail so he could punish her.

Preparing meant deciding beforehand what boundary would exist if she chose to do it again.

Lorraine had made the choice.

Twice.

The first time with a gift tag.

The second with a place card.

The red box only made the consequence visible.

One aunt finally spoke.

“Lorraine, why did you write Guest?”

Lorraine turned sharply.

“She is technically a guest in my home.”

The aunt glanced at the cards away from her plate.

No grand rebellion followed.

No applause.

Just a few people refusing to help maintain the fiction anymore.

That seemed to bother Lorraine more than anger would have.

Her power had always depended on everybody understanding her rules and cooperating with them.

Be polite.

Do not challenge her publicly.

Let the injured person absorb the awkwardness.

The rules were failing because the evidence was embarrassingly ordinary.

A candle.

A tag.

A card.

A key.

Nothing dramatic on its own.

Together, they told the entire story.

Lorraine folded the white card again.

“What do you expect me to do with released my hand.

She walked toward the table.

For one terrible instant, I worried the adults had placed too much responsibility on a child.

Maybe Travis worried too, because his hand lifted slightly as if he wanted to stop her.

He didn’t.

Zia picked up the place card marked Guest.

She carried it back to Lorraine.

Then she
