My parents fully funded his education\u2014tuition, books, living expenses, everything. When I asked my father if they would help me too, he looked me in the eye and said, \u201cYou\u2019re a girl, Anna. You\u2019ll just get married. There\u2019s no point in wasting money on your school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">That rejection fueled a fire in me. I spent years struggling, working multiple jobs, and taking out loans while scraping by to put myself through medical school. I didn&#8217;t have a safety net, but I did have a goal. Today, I am a successful surgeon. I also met and married a wonderful man who happens to be quite wealthy.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wl-brightside.cf.tsp.li\/resize\/728x\/jpg\/3db\/3a5\/e561055e389d491b309416b394.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Recently, my mother called me out of the blue. She wasn&#8217;t calling to congratulate me on my career; she was begging me to lie to my in-laws. Apparently, my in-laws had found out the truth about my parents\u2019 blatant discrimination and were disgusted by it. My parents, suddenly feeling the &#8220;shame&#8221; of their choices, wanted me to tell everyone that they <i data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"350\">did<\/i> fund my education after all.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wl-brightside.cf.tsp.li\/resize\/728x\/jpg\/32b\/de2\/cafa0e5a2c9ada376b5509e70a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">But the audacity didn&#8217;t stop there. Now, my parents are demanding that I support them financially. Their logic is as twisted as it gets: they claim that because they raised me to be &#8220;someone who could attract a rich husband,&#8221; I owe them for my current lifestyle. They believe my success is a direct result of their &#8220;parenting,&#8221; even though they actively tried to limit my future.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">I told them no. I refused to lie for them, and I certainly refused to bankroll them. I am a surgeon because of my own sweat and tears, not because of a &#8220;marriage strategy&#8221; they supposedly planned. They wanted to invest in my brother and leave me with nothing; now, they can look to him for their retirement fund.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">I\u2019m done playing along to &#8220;keep the peace.&#8221; The peace was broken the day they decided my dreams weren&#8217;t worth the investment because of my gender.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up, the rules in my house were clear: my brother was the priority.
