Vivian closed her eyes.

“Why?”
“Because I don’t know who has seen the files.”
“You’re being paranoid.”
“I hope so.”
Paper rustled.

“The signatures are duplicated from old loan authorizations. Yours. Mine. Eleanor’s.”
Eleanor leaned toward the cassette.
My father said, “That’s impossible.”
“No. It’s careful.”
“Who has access?”
“More people than we thought.”
A pause.
Then my father asked, “Vivian?”
Thomas answered immediately.
“No.”
Vivian covered her mouth.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
“What about the board?”
“I don’t know.”
Another long stretch of static.
Then Thomas’s voice lowered.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Someone has been asking about Claire.”
My blood seemed to stop.
My father’s voice changed.
“Who?”
“A young man.”
“What young man?”
“He’s been coming around Northbridge. Says he’s interested in development.”
Vivian opened her eyes.
Eleanor’s hand tightened around her cane.
