Noah turned again and followed his father.

I watched until the crowd swallowed them.

Only then did I move.

I found a seat away from the main flow of travelers.

My knees felt weak when I sat down.

For several seconds, I did nothing except keep my palm over the outside of my coat.

The object underneath was real.

Whatever had just happened was real.

A week earlier, I had been sitting on the floor of a basement apartment surrounded by cardboard boxes, convinced that my son had chosen money over me.

Now I was sitting alone at an airport with something Noah had risked slipping into my pocket.

The courtroom came rushing back.

“I want to live with my dad because my mom cannot give me anything for my future.”

At the time, the sentence had sounded rehearsed only because I desperately wanted it to be.

I had been afraid that calling it rehearsed would make me the kind of mother who refused to accept her child’s choice.

So I had forced myself to hear the words exactly as Noah said them.

He chose Ellis.

I lost.

That was the clean version.

But nothing about Noah’s hug had been clean.

Nothing about his whisper had sounded like rejection.

“Please don’t cry, Mom.”

Then:

“Just wait for me.”
