My wife was still recovering from childbirth, but my mother promised to take care of everything while I was gone.

“You have nothing to worry about, sweetheart. Your wife and baby are in good hands,” she assured me.

I believed her. I even handed her our house key and $200 for groceries.

We had waited nearly five years to become parents.

When Miles finally arrived, everything about our ordinary life suddenly felt extraordinary.

His tiny fingers. His sleepy expressions. The way Natalie smiled whenever he made the smallest sound.

I wanted to be there for every moment.

Unfortunately, seven days after his birth, my manager called me into his office.

A regional warehouse in Dayton had reported an unexplained discrepancy of $41,200. Eleven freight shipments had been recorded incorrectly, and an important audit was approaching.

My manager, Curtis Bellamy, looked exhausted.

“Wesley, I wouldn’t ask if there were another option. You’re the only supervisor I trust to straighten this out before Friday.”

I stared at the paperwork.

“Curtis, my son is a week old. Natalie can barely get through the day without help.”

“I understand. Four days, maximum. Your position will be secure if we get this resolved.”

I hated the situation, but we depended on my salary.

Natalie had temporarily stopped working, and the hospital expenses were still arriving.

When I explained everything to her, she squeezed my hand.

“I don’t want you to go, but we’ll manage. Your mom said she could stay with us.”

That was the one thing that made leaving possible.

My mother, Beverly Hartwell, was sixty-three. She had raised my sister and me after our father left, and I had always admired her determination.

My younger sister, Mallory, was thirty-one and currently between jobs.

They both agreed to help.

At least, that was what I believed.

A Promise Made at Our Front Door

The morning I left, Beverly arrived carrying a small suitcase and wearing the confident smile I remembered from childhood.

Mallory followed behind her, holding a large iced coffee.

Natalie was resting on the living room sofa with Miles asleep against her chest.

I explained the feeding schedule, showed them where everything was stored, and reminded them that Natalie needed regular meals and uninterrupted rest whenever possible.

Beverly interrupted me with a laugh.

“Wesley, I raised two children. You don’t need to teach me how a household works.”

I smiled awkwardly.

“I know, Mom. I just want Natalie to be comfortable.”

I handed her $200.

“This should cover groceries and anything Miles needs. If you run short, call me.”

Beverly folded the bills carefully.

“Of course. Go do your job. We’ll handle everything here.”

Mallory glanced at the money.

“Only two hundred? Groceries aren’t exactly cheap anymore.”

“It’s four days,” I replied. “And the kitchen is already stocked.”

She shrugged.

Before leaving, I kissed Natalie and then gently touched Miles’s forehead.

“I’ll call tonight. I love you both.”

Natalie smiled.

“We love you too. Drive safely.”

As I walked toward my truck, I looked back.

Beverly was standing in the doorway, watching me.

For reasons I couldn’t explain, I felt uneasy.

But I told myself I was simply a nervous new father.

The Calls That Became Shorter

The first evening in Dayton, I called Natalie after finishing a long shift.

She answered on the fourth ring.

Her voice sounded tired.

“Hey, Wes.”

“How are my favorite two people?”

“Miles is sleeping. I’m okay.”

I asked whether she had eaten.

There was a pause.

“Your mom made something earlier.”

“Something good?”

“Just soup.”

Before I could ask anything else, Beverly’s voice came through the phone.

“Natalie needs to rest, Wesley. Stop keeping her awake.”

The call ended a few moments later.

I tried again the following morning.

No answer.

At lunchtime, Beverly sent a message saying Natalie was sleeping and Miles was doing wonderfully.

That evening, Mallory answered Natalie’s phone.

“She’s busy with the baby. Seriously, Wes, you’re checking in like every five minutes.”

“I haven’t spoken to my wife all day.”

“Because she’s exhausted. Let her breathe.”

I didn’t like her tone, but I assumed everyone was adjusting to the demands of a newborn.

Then, on the third morning, I received a notification from our bank.

A $340 purchase had been made using Natalie’s debit card at an electronics store.

I immediately called her.

No answer.

I called Beverly.

“Mom, did Natalie buy something yesterday?”

“Why?”

“There’s a charge on her card.”

“Mallory needed to pick up a few things. Natalie said it was fine.”

I frowned.

“What things?”

“Wesley, we’re busy caring for your family. Do you really want to interrogate us over every little purchase?”

She hung up.

For the first time, I began wondering whether leaving had been a terrible mistake.

The Missing Papers and an Unexpected Discovery

At the Dayton warehouse, I had spent nearly three days reviewing freight manifests.

The physical inventory was correct.

Nothing valuable had disappeared.

But eleven signed delivery receipts were missing, making it appear that thousands of dollars in merchandise had vanished.

Late Wednesday afternoon, I found the problem.

A former accounting assistant had accidentally filed the original receipts under an outdated vendor account.

The shipments had been delivered and paid for.

When I called Curtis, he sounded relieved.
