“How long?” My voice sounded strange to my own ears.

“Come home. We need to talk.”
His response came quickly: “Can it wait till morning?”
“No,” I replied.

“Mom,” James said. “You shouldn’t be here.”

James’s face reddened. “You agreed to help.”

“Thank you,” I said.
“I know you probably hate me…” she began.
