Today Show Host’s Mother Missing In Arizona As Homicide Detectives Join Search

The mother of Savannah Guthrie has been reported missing in Arizona under what authorities described as “concerning circumstances.”

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in Catalina Foothills, a community north of Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, per the New York Post.

Officials said Guthrie is “not in good physical health” and was classified as a “vulnerable adult.” A relative placed a 911 call around noon Sunday to report her missing, Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a press conference.

Authorities later confirmed that Nancy Guthrie is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, who has served as a co-anchor of NBC’s Today since 2012, according to ABC15 Arizona.

The case is being treated as a large-scale search and rescue mission. Homicide detectives were also seen processing the elderly woman’s home — a step officials said is not standard protocol in typical missing-person cases.

“We’ve pretty much thrown everything at this that we can,” Nanos said, referring to the extensive resources and personnel involved in the search.

“I don’t need to tell you, this is very concerning to us; we don’t typically get the sheriff out on a scene like this but it is very concerning,” Nanos said.

The sheriff said authorities have “grave concern” for her well-being. While Guthrie was not known to suffer from conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s and was considered to be of “sound mind,” officials said they were worried about her exposure to the cold.

“She does have some physical ailments that limit her mobility,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said.

Savannah Guthrie has not publicly commented on her mother’s disappearance, according to the New York Post.
