In the wake of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize announcement, Donald Trump expressed frustration over not receiving the honor, asserting that he had “ended wars” and deserved recognition. The prize was awarded to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader celebrated for her fight for democracy and peaceful transition from dictatorship.
Trump criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision, saying, “Obama got a prize for doing nothing… He got elected and they gave it to him for destroying our country.” He contrasted this with his own record, claiming he had made real strides toward global peace.
Despite the snub, Trump revealed that Machado had personally called him to dedicate her award in part to his support for Venezuela’s democratic movement. He said, “She called me and said, ‘I’m accepting this in honor of you.’” Trump added that he didn’t ask for the prize but appreciated the gesture.
Experts, however, noted that Trump had “no chance” of winning this year due to the Nobel Committee’s strict criteria for peacebuilding. Historian Asle Sveen remarked that the committee prioritizes sustained, non-partisan efforts toward peace, which Trump’s record did not meet.
Looking ahead, some analysts speculate Trump could be a more serious contender in 2026, depending on future diplomatic achievements. For now, his comments have reignited debate over the politicization of the Nobel Peace Prize and the legacy of past recipients.
