My husband, Kurt, and I flew across the country to visit my sister, Sasha. She was so excited to have us, but by the second morning, the atmosphere in her cozy apartment turned cold. Sasha was acting sharp and distracted, and she began avoiding Kurt entirely. I thought she just wasn’t used to having guests, but at 2:17 a.m., she sent me an urgent text asking to talk.
In her bedroom, Sasha broke down and told me I needed to get a hotel. She revealed that Kurt had been holding her only bathroom hostage for hours at a time. She’d had to drive to a gas station just to use the restroom because Kurt would lock himself in for three hours and refuse to answer the door. When I confronted Kurt, he laughed it off, claiming he was just “playing games” because Sasha’s city was “boring.”
I didn’t believe him. While he was in the shower, I checked his phone. I found a dating app I’d never seen before, filled with flirty messages to a woman named “Mickie.” He had been using my sister’s bathroom as his secret headquarters to cheat on me. He even had a plan to meet her at a hotel that night. I kicked him out of Sasha’s house immediately.
The next day, Kurt called me in tears. It turns out “Mickie” was actually a scammer who lured him to a hotel room, robbed him of all his cash and credit cards, and left him stranded. He begged me to come home and forget everything, but I just laughed. I told him we could go home, but only so he could pick up his bags from the porch.
