If you have the time to use my interview work, you have the time to pay for it

I’m done with the corporate world’s lack of basic decency. I spent three weeks jumping through hoops for a “Senior Lead” position: three hour-long Zoom calls, a presentation to the board, and a five-hour technical assignment that I stayed up until 2:00 AM to finish. The HR manager, Kelly, told me I was their top choice and to expect an offer by Monday.

Monday came and went. Tuesday, nothing. My polite follow-ups were met with total silence, and my calls went straight to voicemail. Then I saw the truth on LinkedIn: they had hired the CEO’s nephew. They couldn’t even be bothered to send a template rejection email after I gave them 15+ hours of my life for free.

I decided if they wanted to act like a professional business, I’d treat them like one. I drafted an itemized invoice: $450 for consulting hours, $800 for the technical asset I created, and a $200 “No-Show” fee. Total: $1,450. I sent it straight to their Accounting Department as “Services Rendered.”

Suddenly, Kelly found her voice. She called me “insane” and “unprofessional,” claiming I couldn’t legally charge them. I simply pointed out that I knew they were already using my technical assignment in their live project. I told her to pay up or my lawyer would be in touch for copyright infringement. Ten minutes later, I got the notification: Payment Received. I didn’t get the job, but I got my dignity—and a $1,450 “Ghosting Fee.”
